ASUS' 31.5-inch 4K monitor is up for pre-order for an introductory $3,500

ASUS' 315inch 4K monitor is up for preorder for an introductory $3,500

A mere month after ASUS unveiled its 31.5-inch 4K monitor to the world, and the humbly-named PQ321 is already available for pre-order on Amazon, Newegg and TigerDirect. As a reminder, the Ultra HD display boasts a jaw-dropping 3840 x 2160-pixel 10-bit RGB (a billion colors) IGZO panel with LED backlight, 176-degree viewing angles, a maximum of 350 cd/m2 in brightness and 8ms GTG response time. Built-in stereo speakers sweeten the package, as does a 3.5mm audio jack, DisplayPort connectivity and dual HDMI inputs. Oh, and did we mention it's also apparently the thinnest 4K monitor on the market at only 35mm thick? However, you'll have to pay a pretty penny for all that awesomeness: it has an introductory price of $3,499.99. That's about $300 less than what was announced a month ago, but it's still not exactly cheap. The PQ321 is set for a July 16th release date, so you still have a couple weeks to bribe relatives, rob a bank or sell off any unwanted organs.

A Russian Rocket Just Exploded Over Kazakhstan as It Launched

A Russian rocket just crashed seconds after it was launched from a spaceport in Kazakhstan. Footage from local news channels shows how the rocket wobbled through the sky as it rose into the air, before disintegrating and falling back to Earth.

The rocket, called Proton-M, was carrying three navigation satellites into space?but was fortunately unmanned. According to the Interfax news agency, it fell 1 kilometer from its launchpad less than a minute of taking off.

There are currently no reported ground injuries so far?but the news agency reports that the crash site could have been infected with hundreds of tons of poisonous heptyl and amyl from the fuel:

"The rocket fell during the first minute of its flight when its tanks contained about 500 tons of fuel. A lot of decontamination work may have to be done at the crash site."

It's not the first time a Proton-M rocket has shown weaknesses: one crashed after launching from Baikonur in 2007, and a booster fell from one into the Pacific Ocean in 2010. This incident doesn't do a lot for its track record. [Interfax via BBC via Verge]

Teva says cleared of wrongdoing after man's death in France

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel's Teva Pharmaceutical Industries said on Monday that French prosecutors had cleared it of any operational failures after the death of a 92-year-old man last month.

A preliminary investigation showed there was no trace of the sedative zopiclone in the drugmaker's diuretic furosemide, Teva said in a statement.

French police said on June 9 they were treating the man's death as "suspicious" after he was given medicine that may have been wrongly labeled as a diuretic drug.

France's pharmaceutical watchdog ANSM had asked pharmacies to take 190,000 boxes of Teva's drug off their shelves just two days before the man died, saying they may contain zopiclone.

"The results of the investigation clear Teva of all suspicion of failure in its operations," Teva Chief Executive Jeremy Levin said.

Teva, the world's No.1 generic drugmaker, said ANSM's decision to recall the drugs had been the right one, even though it proved unnecessary in retrospect.

Apple files application for 'iWatch' trademark in Japan

Apple files application to register 'iWatch' trademark in Japan

Evidence is mounting that Apple might out a smartwatch in the near future after Yahoo Japan noticed that the company applied for the "iWatch" trademark in Japan on June 3rd. Our Japanese editor noticed that several other companies have applied for that term as well, though this one (released on June 27th) is from Apple Inc. of Cupertino. That follows a patent application from Apple we saw earlier in the year for a watch-like AMOLED device that proposed a slap bracelet, kinetic energy charger and "end-detection" user sensor, among other features. In addition, other rumors from Bloomberg back in February suggested that 100 Apple employees were working on a smartwatch of some kind. If we don't see a device after all that, Cupertino's gone to a heck of a lot of trouble for nothing -- check after the break for a screen grab (in Japanese) of the trademark application.
