The 267-page Freeh Report, after an exhaustive eight-month investigation, concluded Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, along with three other top Penn State officials, conspired to cover-up child sexual-abuse allegations made against Jerry Sandusky, for over a decade. An editorial in today?s P-G contends Penn State should suspend its football program for now, but an article by Ron Cook, in the same edition of the newspaper, makes a case for no NCAA sanctions against the legendary program. What sayeth Toadsly? Well, it makes no sense to punish football players who had no culpability in these lurid affairs. Paterno?s alleged coconspirators, Spanier, Schultz & Curley, if convicted, will probably wind up in prison. That?s where the old, convicted ?tickle bear,? Jerry Sandusky, is headed, probably, for the rest of his natural life.? Since Paterno?s dead, that?s not an option. The appropriate punishment for Joe Pa?s alleged crime is to strip him of all wins beginning from the date he first discovered Sandusky?s sins and chose to do nothing. I know, I know big Penn State fans that this means Joe would no longer be the ?winningest? football coach in major college history. But look at it this way: If Joe were still alive and went to prison, even though he?d have had many of his victories negated, he?d still be the ?winningest? major football coach ever incarcerated! ?
