On January 15th I?ll be driving to Terre Haute to talk to some ISU creative writing students about writing and the business thereof, and then, at 6:00, I?ll be signing copies of The Bones of the Old Ones at the Terre Haute Barnes and Noble. I suppose I could sign other items as well, if you really want. For instance, if you need a signed copy of Memory of Light, or always wanted a signature on your Land of the Lost costume, I?ll be happy to help out.

From January 18th to January 20th I?ll be at ConFusion up in sunny Dearborn Michigan. I attended ConFusion for the first time last year and it?s a great convention. The staff are personable and very well-organized. There?s a strong gaming track AND a strong writing track, and the panels are intimate. Also, there are a number of movers and shakers at ConFusion with whom it?s usually hard to rub elbows at larger cons.

You can find more details at the official ConFusion site, but for the record I highly recommend it. Try it out before everyone?s in on the secret and it gets TOO big!

Gov. Bob McDonnell announced on Monday 15 grants totaling $440,900 awarded by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries to improve boating access to the public waters of Virginia.? Identified as a need in Virginia?s Outdoors Plan, these new and improved boating access sites will help boaters access the bountiful public waters of the Commonwealth.

?These projects assist localities with projects that provide enhanced access to recreational opportunities of state waters,? said McDonnell. ?These new recreational opportunities will benefit Virginia business and tourism.?

?The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries is to be commended for initiating this partnership with localities to increase access,? said Doug Domenech, Virginia?s Secretary of Natural Resources.? ?The boating public ? both motorized and non-motorized ? will be well served by these grants.?

?This is not a new program for the Department, but one that needed reinvigorating,? said Bob Duncan, Director for the Department.? ?The Department was having trouble finding suitable locations for new boating access points, but adding the eyes and ears of over 100 local governments generated a number of excellent locations where access can be constructed or improved.? We look forward to continuing and expanding this program.?

Under the program, the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries cost-shares with the local government to provide the new sites and improve existing ones.? After entering into a cooperative agreement with the Department, the local government provides the designs, constructs the projects, and agrees to keep them maintained and open to the public for a period of 20 or more years.? Funds for these grants come from the Department?s Boat Fund and the federal Sport Fish Restoration Fund. The Boat Fund is generated from fees for titling and registering boats as well as the transfer of watercraft sales and use fees. The federal Sport Fish Restoration Fund is based primarily on the number of fishing licenses sold.

According to a recently released economic impact study, the Virginia recreational boating industry employs more than 9,000 people statewide and contributes $2 billion to the Virginia economy annually. There are 250,000 registered motorboats statewide and 23,000 in the localities receiving these grants. The grants totaling $440,900 will generate construction projects estimated to be worth $839,000.

Living cells behave like fluid-filled sponges

Jan. 6, 2013 ? Animal cells behave like fluid-filled sponges in response to being mechanically deformed according to new research published January 7 in Nature Materials.

Scientists from the London Centre for Nanotechnology (LCN) at UCL have shown that animal cells behave according to the theory of 'poroelasticity' when mechanically stimulated in a way similar to that experienced in organs within the body. The results indicate that the rate of cell deformation in response to mechanical stress is limited by how quickly water can redistribute within the cell interior.

Poroelasticity was originally formulated to describe the behaviour of water-saturated soils and has important applications in the fields of rock engineering and petro-physics. It is commonly used in the petroleum industry. Poroelastic models describe cells as being analogous to fluid-filled sponges. Indeed, cells are constituted of a sponge-like porous elastic matrix (comprising the cytoskeleton, organelles, and macromolecules) bathed in an interstitial fluid (the cytosol).

In this analogy, the rate at which the fluid-filled sponge can be deformed is limited by how fast internal water can redistribute within the sponge in response to deformation. This rate is dictated by three parameters: the stiffness of the sponge matrix, the size of the pores within the sponge matrix, and the viscosity of the interstitial fluid.

To study cellular responses, LCN scientists used cell-sized levers to apply rapid well-controlled deformations on the cell surface and monitored the temporal response of cells to these deformations. Close examination of the experimental results revealed that the rate of cellular deformation was limited by how rapidly water could redistribute within the cell interior. Experimental measurements indicated that this sponge-like behaviour of cells likely occurs during normal function of organs such as the lungs and the cardiovascular system.

Emad Moeendarbary, lead author of the paper from the LCN said: "In the cardiovascular system, some tissues encounter extreme mechanical conditions. Heart valves can typically withstand 7-fold increases in their length in less than one second. The poroelastic nature of cells may allow them to behave similarly to shock absorbers when exposed to these extreme mechanical conditions."

To experimentally verify the fluid-filled sponge model, researchers manipulated the size of the cellular pores using chemical and genetic tools and showed that the rate of cellular deformation was affected by the pore size, as suggested by the theory of poroelasticity.

Guillaume Charras, senior co-author of the paper from the LCN said: "Cells can detect the mechanical forces they are subjected to and modify their behaviour accordingly. How changes in the mechanical environment are converted into biochemical information that the cell can interpret remains unknown. A better understanding of the physics of the cellular material is a first step towards formulating possible mechanisms through which this could occur."

An adult living in Maryland should follow these 7 steps(ARA) ? Hearing loss is common, but the perception that hearing loss is only caused by aging is incorrect. More than 36 million Americans have hearing loss. Changing lifestyle habits, and treating a variety of health conditions can help to prevent hearing loss. For an adult living in Maryland, now is as good a time as any to change some habits.

Seven healthy habits may help prevent or delay the onset of hearing loss:

1. Noise

Noise-induced hearing loss is the most common yet preventable cause of hearing loss. Exposure to dangerous levels of noise can occur at work, home and in many recreational activities. Wear ear plugs or muffs when operating loud equipment (i.e., lawn mowers, power saws, leaf blower, etc.) or when using firearms. Buy quieter products (compare dB ratings advertised on the products ? the smaller the better).

2. iPod/MP3 Players

Listening to MP3 players at dangerous levels can cause permanent hearing loss. You can download apps to ensure noise exposure through your iPod does not exceed dangerous decibel levels. ?Volume Limit? is a switch in the ?settings? section of your iPhone or iPod to make sure that your hearing is protected. This allows you to set a maximum level for the volume output of the media player and even put a 4-digit code on it to keep it fixed.

3. Diabetes

The National Institute of Health (NIH) has found that hearing loss is twice as common in people with diabetes. Furthermore, of the 79 million adults with pre-diabetes, the rate of hearing loss is 30 percent higher than in those with normal blood sugar levels. Moderate weight loss, eating healthy and exercise can delay or prevent type 2 diabetes among adults at-risk for diabetes.

4. Smoking

Smoking is a risk factor for hearing loss. Smokers are nearly 70 percent more likely than nonsmokers to suffer hearing loss. Exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke almost doubles the risk of hearing loss among adolescents. Studies show that smoking, age and noise exposure together increase the risk for hearing loss more than each of these factors alone.

5. Cardiovascular disease

Not only does exercise help to prevent type 2 diabetes, but cardiovascular health and hearing health appear associated. Growing evidence suggests a link between hearing loss and poor cardiovascular health.

6. Earwax (Cerumen)

Don?t swab your ear canals. Cerumen cleans and lubricates the skin of the ear canal and provides protection from bacteria, fungi, insects and water. Attempting to remove cerumen or cleaning the ear canal with a cotton swab tends to push earwax deeper into the ear canal. Excess or impacted cerumen can press against the eardrum and/or occlude the external auditory canal resulting in hearing loss.

7. See an audiologist

Susceptibility to hearing loss is often undiagnosed and unrecognized. The Audiology Awareness Campaign, a nonprofit foundation aimed at providing the public with information on hearing loss, is sponsoring the fifth annual Listen Up America Week, National Hearing Screening Week, May 14 to 18, where audiologists will offer free hearing screenings nationwide.
